This week’s federal Conservative party leadership debates were an exercise in contrasts. The candidates — Leslyn Lewis, Peter MacKay, Erin O’Toole and Derek Sloan — sought to draw contrasts with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as well as amongst each other as they advanced their respective cases to be chosen as the party’s next leader in August. But the sharpest contrast may have been inadvertent: it was with the relative dynamism and range of the Conservative party’s last leadership race in 2017.
