With the best of intentions, the prominent Canadians who would have Prime Minister Justin Trudeau enter into a quid pro quo with China to secure the freedom of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor have done their cause more harm than good.

In a letter to Trudeau dated June 23, 19 high-profile signatories, including former parliamentarians and senior diplomats, called on the federal government to drop the extradition case against Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in exchange for the release of the two Canadians.
