On This Day in Canada’s Political History: David Milgaard Released from Stony Mountain Penitentiary

It was on this date in 1992 that David Milgaard’s journey seeking truth and justice brought him a little closer to exoneration.  Wrongfully convicted of the 1969 Saskatoon murder of nurse Gail Miller, Milgaard spent 23 years in prison, maintaining his innocence the entire time, making him ineligible for parole. His mother, Joyce, led an often-lonely campaign over the decades – even confronting Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in public – seeking justice for her son.  In turn, Mulroney’s government referred the matter to the Supreme Court of Canada and the Justices recommended that Milgaard’s conviction be set aside.  He was released from prison in 1992.By 1997 DNA fully exonerated David Milgaard and the governments of Saskatchewan and Canada compensated him.  One week later, the real killer, Larry Fisher, was arrested and later tried, convicted and sentence to life in prison for the murder of Gail Miller. The story of David Milgaard’s wrongful conviction and his loss of freedom is one Canadians forget at their peril. In 1990, CBC's The Fifth Estate examined the case when it was still unresolved but considered a possible wrongful conviction.  Click here to view a YouTube video of Gillian Findlay's investigation. As CBC reported in March 2020, David Milgaard now works to help others fight wrongful convictions and was appointed by PM Justin Trudeau to serve on an Independent Review Board Working Group.[caption id="attachment_550519" align="aligncenter" width="440"] David Milgaard[/caption]Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.  He was research assistant on The Rt.
