Today in Canada’s Political History: Appointment of Ray Hnatyshyn as Governor General

Prime Minister Brian Mulroney made history on this date in 1989, announcing that Her Majesty the Queen had officially approved the appointment of Saskatchewan’s Ray Hnatyshyn as Canada’s next Governor General. From a Ukrainian background, Governor General Hnatyshyn would serve with distinction in his Vice-Regal post until his term ended in 1995. He is particularly remembered for his opening up Rideau Hall and its grounds to Canadians during his tenure.A former MP first elected in 1974, before becoming Governor General, Ray Hnatyshyn served in the cabinets of both Prime Minister Joe Clark and Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.[caption id="attachment_585861" align="alignleft" width="210"] Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn and Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth[/caption]Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.  He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy.  A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
