A member of one of Canada’s most exclusive clubs marks his special day today. I speak, of course, of New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs, who was born in the small town of Woodstock on this date in 1954.Higgs graduated from UNB with an engineering degree and went on to work for Irving Oil for the better part of three decades before entering provincial politics in 2010. He served for four years as the Minister of Finance before winning the province’s Progressive Conservative leadership race in 2016. By 2018 he had become Premier, leading a razor thin minority government. In September 2020, six months into the pandemic, Higgs' government was re-elected with a majority. He remains in office today, and at 68 years of age, is the oldest premier in New Brunswick history.Happy birthday, Premier Higgs![caption id="attachment_392250" align="alignleft" width="459"] New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs[/caption]Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.
