Today in Canada’s Political History: Wedding of Louis St. Laurent and Jeanne Renault

On this date in 1908 a dashing young lawyer named Louis St. Laurent married his sweetheart, Jeanne Renault who, four decades later, would accompany him to 24 Sussex Drive.  The two were married for a remarkable 58 years (until Jeanne's passing in 1966) and had five children together. As it turned out, Jeanne found no joy in politics and liked living in Ottawa even less.  She was more than relieved when her husband’s service as Prime Minister ended with the defeat of the St. Laurent government at the hands of John Diefenbaker in 1957. Mrs. St. Laurent passed into history in 1966, with her husband following her in 1973.Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.  He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy.  A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.[caption id="attachment_619326" align="alignleft" width="220"] Louis St. Laurent's wedding day, 1908[/caption]
