Today in Canada’s Political History: Happy Birthday, John Manley!

Today one of the most respected cabinet ministers of recent decades, John Manley, celebrates his special day. He’s turning 72.First elected to the Commons in 1988, Manley was a Liberal heavyweight in the cabinets of then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, serving as Minister in three portfolios: Industry, Foreign Affairs and Finance.  Perhaps most importantly, he was also named Deputy Prime Minister in 2002.John Manley left politics in 2004 and has had a very successful career since in the private sector. My only quibble with him is his anti-Monarchy views! However, as today is his big day, I’m willing to forget that.Happy birthday John Manley.Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.  He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy.  A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
