Today one of the most respected cabinet ministers of recent decades, John Manley, celebrates his special day. He’s turning 72.First elected to the Commons in 1988, Manley was a Liberal heavyweight in the cabinets of then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, serving as Minister in three portfolios: Industry, Foreign Affairs and Finance. Perhaps most importantly, he was also named Deputy Prime Minister in 2002.John Manley left politics in 2004 and has had a very successful career since in the private sector. My only quibble with him is his anti-Monarchy views! However, as today is his big day, I’m willing to forget that.Happy birthday John Manley.Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.
