Today in Canada’s Political History: Lady Bird Johnson's Comments on Dinner with Lester Pearson

Lester Pearson was in Washington, D.C. on this date in 1964 and Canada’s Prime Minister hosted a small dinner for President Lyndon Johnson at Canada’s embassy. At the end of the night, Lady Bird Johnson, America’s First Lady, recorded her impressions of Pearson (who was joined at the dinner by Paul Martin Sr. and Canada’s forestry minister John Nicolson) in her audio diary.  They are now available at this link. It's certainly interesting to listen to Lady Bird's recorded thoughts of the dinner, including her, and the State Department's, take on Canada- US relations and on Mr. Pearson.  And, rest assured, Mr. Pearson did well in Lady Bird’s estimation![caption id="attachment_604239" align="alignleft" width="462"] Lady Bird Johnson[/caption]Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.  He was research assistant on The Rt.
