ST. JOHN'S -- A look at John Hogan, leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Party. After ten years in power, the Liberals lost Tuesday's election, and Hogan will be out as premier after only a few months in the job.

Age: 47

Education: Hogan studied biochemistry at Memorial University and law at Dalhousie University.

Before politics: Hogan was called to the bar in Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador. He started his own firm in 2014.

Political record: He was sworn in as premier on May 9, after winning the Liberal leadership race earlier that month. He replaced Andrew Furey, who shocked the province when he announced in February his intention to resign.

He was first elected to provincial politics in 2021 in the St. John's district of Windsor Lake, defeating the leader of the Progressive Conservatives at the time. He held cabinet portfolios in justice and health, and he was the attorney general until March.

Family: He and his wife, Gillian, have two young children named Maggie and Jack.

Quote: "Not only is it an important election issue, it is the election issue. It is what we need to talk about as a province." -- John Hogan, speaking to reporters in August about a tentative energy deal between Hydro-Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.
